Our collection of objects is broad and includes everything from religious objects and ceremonial objects to everyday objects, works of art and personal belongings. Together, they constitute a material documentation of Norwegian-Jewish life and culture, as it has developed in Nordenfjeldske Norway through the ages. Each individual object carries a story – whether it is a tower crown from a synagogue, a Sabbath candlestick from a home, a suitcase used during flight, or a work of art created in post-war reflection.

The collection helps to shed light on how Jewish traditions and ways of life have been practiced in different eras and under changing social conditions. It also tells about adaptation, belonging and identity, and places minority experiences in the context of the larger Norwegian history. For the museum, it is important to showcase both the specific and the general – both what stands out, and what is recognized across environments and backgrounds.
