Jewish footprints in Trondheim – Guided Tour

Where did the first Jews in Trondheim come from?
Where were there stores owned by Jewish families and who were they?
Where was the secret synagogue during the Second World War?

The first Jewish people and families settled in Trondheim at the end of the 19th Century. Commerce became the common business among the Norwegian-Jewish population, and in the 1930s it was more than thirty companies owned by Jewish men and women in Trondheim. Today there are few physical memories of these flourishing businesses, but through presentation and pictures much of the history can be told about this part of the history of Trondheim.

Join us on a historical journey through Midtbyen of Trondheim to explore this history. Over the course of two hours, the guide will take the students around the city and visit places where Jewish families from Trondheim lived and worked. Through the guided tour, the students will get to know the Jewish history of the city, from when the Jews migrated to Norway around 1880, through to the Second World War and up to the present day.

In addition to learn about the history of the Jewish history in Trondheim, the tour will also include topics such as ethical question regarding human worth, cultural diversity, and democratic values. The group will among other things reflect on mindsets of past and midsets that exists today.

For classes in 9th and 10th grade in Trondheim, this is offered through the cultural initiative Den kulturelle skolesekken.
