Purim celebration in the 1950s

Jewish museum Trondheim will in the following weeks present photographs and artifacts from the museum’s collection. We temporarily call this column “Artifact of the week”. When the schools open and the museum is back to normal, we will go back to our usual “Artifact of the month”.

The photograph was taken during a Purim celebration in 1955 and shows, from the left, Sonja Bodd, Albert Ragle, Sara Ragle, Frida Kahn and Anna Isaksen (in front).

Purim is a holiday which is celebrated in February/March to commemorate Queen Esther who prevented a genocide of the Jews. For Purim, there are carnivals and lively parties. It is also normal to give money to charity and to give baskets of food, sweets and the like to friends, older people and relatives.

The photograph is one of several thousand photographs in the museum’s collection.
