ABOUT THE LECTURES
Two books about the Holocaust have received considerable attention in 2025. We have invited author Frode Helland to talk about his book "Holocaust - a story told by the victims". We are also pleased to have literary critic Vigdis Moe Skarstein visit, who will talk about the book "Postkortet".
Frode Helland's book, "Holocaust - a story told by the victims", has been praised by critics here at home. "A book of international format", writes Dagbladet. In the work, the prisoners themselves tell about their experiences from German captivity. The publication, which summarizes the prisoners' own impressions, is unique in the Norwegian context. With this book, Helland was nominated for the Brage Prize 2025.
"The Postcard" has in turn become an international bestseller - a story that also touches on our own time - "The fate of a Jewish family during the Second World War is conveyed in a way that makes the book frighteningly relevant.", wrote Vigdis Moe Skarstein in Adresseavisen. The book is based on a real and moving family story: an anonymous postcard with the names of the author's Jewish relatives who were killed in Auschwitz leads to a deep dive into family history and Holocaust fates. This moving story about the fate of the Jewish family also touches on our own time. In this way, the work helps to make the story relevant to our time.
ABOUT HOLOCAUST DAY
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an annual commemoration day observed every year on January 27 to remember the victims of the Holocaust - the Nazi genocide of six million Jews, as well as millions of other victims such as Roma, homosexuals, political dissidents and other groups persecuted by the Nazis during World War II.
The date was chosen because it was on this day in 1945 that Soviet forces liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. Holocaust Remembrance Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2005, when the General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to educate their citizens about the Holocaust and prevent future genocide. In many countries, memorial ceremonies, lectures and cultural events are held to remember the victims and to combat anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination.
