Choir & Klezmer - concert in the synagogue on November 8th!
Jewish Museum Trondheim invites you to a celebration of Norwegian male singing tradition and Jewish folk music!
The klezmer duo Morten Michelsen (clarinet) and Tor Petter Aanes (piano and vocals), have allied themselves with the Sangforeningen af Kongens Mænd, and will come to the synagogue on November 8 to honor two musical traditions. They have put together a repertoire of traditional hits from Norwegian male singing literature and gems from the Jewish klezmer tradition – arranged especially for the occasion.
This is not the first time that the Jewish meets the choral tradition. In the Talmud, one can read that the Temple of Jerusalem had twelve musicians and twelve singers. Since the Temple was destroyed, the relationship with music in the church service has been limited. At the same time, the Jewish musical tradition has flourished outside the synagogue, including through klezmer – the European-Jewish folk music.
Trondheim got its first synagogue choir in 1939, under the leadership and initiative of Kantor Josef Grabowski. Oskar Mendelsohn writes that "the choir's performance and the cantor's leadership of the service created a solemn atmosphere that had rarely been experienced in the synagogue in Trondheim".
We promise a warm and pleasant evening with both humor and sadness.
Everyone who wishes to participate is welcome!
Doors open at 6:30 PM.
Concert starts at 7:00 PM
