Yiddish in Trondheim. Lecture with Professor Stian Hårstad
11/14/24, 11:00 AM
Welcome to a lecture on Yiddish!
The Jewish immigration to Norway at the end of the 19th century brought with it increased cultural and linguistic diversity. The vast majority of migrants had Yiddish as their first language, and they continued to use it to a large extent in their daily lives in their new homeland. However, it would prove to be demanding to pass on Yiddish skills to the next generation. Several factors slowed down the language trade, and Yiddish was already in sharp decline in Jewish communities when the horrors of World War II struck and caused irreparable damage to all Jewish culture.
In this lecture, Stian Hårstad, professor at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU, talks about the language that could once also be heard in homes in Trøndelag, and which was actually used as a stage language well into the 1930s. The Jewish Museum Trondheim welcomes everyone who wants to participate.
The event begins at 6:00 PM at the Jewish Museum Trondheim.
The event is free.
No pre-registration is required, but please register your interest on our Facebook event.
