Open lunch seminar: "Farewell, Shtetl!" - A research project from NTNU
11/27/24, 11:00 AM
A research project on the history of Jewish migration!
In the period 1880–1920, approximately 2.5 million Jews emigrated from Eastern Europe. The majority sought refuge in North and South America, Palestine, South Africa and Western European countries. A small minority of the migrants took the shortest route across the Baltic Sea, via Sweden and eventually to Norway and Trøndelag. In 1905, the Jewish religious community was established in Trondheim with 125 members, all with family backgrounds from Eastern Europe.
“Farewell, Shtetl!” is an interdisciplinary research project at NTNU, Department of Teacher Education. The main goal of the project is to find out what characterized Jewish migration to Norway, the migrants’ encounters with the larger society and what place migration has in Jewish identity formation and collective memory today.
The Jewish Museum Trondheim invites you to a seminar with doctoral fellow Martin Strickert, where he will talk about this exciting project. The lecture will be introduced by Jon Reitan, Associate Professor at the Department of Teacher Education, NTNU.
The lecture is in Norwegian.
The event takes place during the open museum, and is open and accessible to anyone who wishes to participate. Free admission.
No advance registration is required, but please register your interest via this Facebook event.
